IHN Volunteers

Ways you can help

Interfaith Hospitality Network of the South Hills offers many ways for individuals, groups and congregations to participate in this hands-on mission. Some of these include:

  • Volunteers -- The Network is staffed by volunteers from the Host and Support Congregations, along with individuals and community groups.

  • Warehouse Workers -- Volunteers move furniture for guests and pick up donated items.

  • Host Congregations -- Host Congregations offer their buildings and their members to shelter and support the Network guests. Additional congregations are encouraged and welcome to join us as Host Congregations.

  • Support Congregations -- Support Congregations offer volunteers, finances, and supplies.

  • Family Center Support -- Volunteers are needed to staff the Family Centers on weekends.

  • Handyman Skills -- Our Family Centers require regular maintenance and periodic updates. There are many opportunities for those who are handy with tools and skilled in the areas of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting.

“Being able to see that a family has a place to sleep, that children are fed . . . or just to be able to lend a smile and a friendly chat. When we are able to assist even one person, we are doing God’s will, no matter what our faith."

Volunteers remodeled the Washington Family Center prior to the January 2002 move-in.

While accepting the Philadelphia Liberty Medal on July 4, 2002 Secretary of State Colin Powell asked Americans to devote more time to public service...

"Everybody can make the time to serve on a school board, volunteer at a local shelter, mentor a kid who needs someone to care."

The Family Center kitchen in Washington was totally remodeled using volunteer labor and donated kitchen cabinets.

“The families I have met have touched my life in ways that are difficult for me to express. Perhaps it is as simple as ‘love one another.’ Working with the families in IHN has helped me to grow as a Christian and hopefully has helped me become more understanding of others."
